Libraries and Archives – the new synergy
I began the day by listening to Lise Bissonnette, CEO of Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, and Ian Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. The news from these leaders of major institutions is the successful integration of library and archives functions. By consolidating support services and seeking synergies between these repositories of culture and heritage, a new information landscape is being created.
The role of the public library was also discussed. The public library should evolve from a place of service and reading to a cultural hub in the community that includes a social space for free expression. In addition, public libraries are also becoming hubs in the broader electronic network of information services. Public libraries are places where expert assistance will be found for the library and archive information that is being developed online in Canada and around the world.
